Over the years, the yen has undergone several changes, both in terms of its design and its value. In the early 20th century, Japan adopted the gold standard, which pegged the 12 best investments for any age or income – 2020 value of the yen to gold. The yen replaced the complex feudal currency system based on the mon. The term ‘yen’ means ’round object’ in Japanese, reflecting the shape of the coinage. Despite experiencing periods of inflation and deflation, the yen is considered a safe-haven currency and is known for its stability. In general, vending machines do not accept a 2,000 yen bill and many stores’ cash registers do not have a built-in space for them.

The 10,000 yen, also known as a 1-man(万) bill, is currently the largest bank note in circulation. The face side of the bank note includes a portrait of Yukichi Fukuzawa, a Meiji-era philosopher and the founder of the famous Keio University in Tokyo. On the back are young leaves symbolizing Japan, Japan’s country name and the coin’s production date engraved in kanji.
